Known for being a staunch critic of Pesident Rodrigo Duterte's controversial administration, Senator Leila De Lima has been arrested by law enforcement bodies after charges against heer were filed in court.
These charges link her to receiving money from drug dealers incarcerated in local prisons. The charges came after conflicting allegations and inconsistent testimonies from convicted drug lords.
At around 7 p.m. on Thursday, the senator called for a press conference to express her objection to the warrant of her arrest, saying that the police should pay respect to the Senate premises because of the Chamber's protocol.
Meanwhile, former senator Jinggoy Estrada slammed De Lima for her demands to request refuge. He cited that, when he was arrested, the senator did not grant him such a privilege.
His Facebook post said:
"Why do you have to seek refuge in the Senate? We never sought for refuge when you had us arrested!! Who are you to demand where you want to be jailed? We never did that during your time!!
We surrendered even before the warrant of arrest was served. We went to Crame immediately. Can't you do the same? SHAME OFYOU"
De Lima slept in her Senate office overnight before she surrendered to authorities on Friday morning.
