The local police authorities identified the victim as Cherrymae Dayo, an education student of Southern Philippines College and a caretaker of the house where the incident happened. She died because of multiple stabs after she was raped. Her neighbors brought her to the Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC) where she lost her life past midnight.
Hours after the report of the incident, the investigators positively identified the suspects as Warren Amarga (24), Angel Mae Rada (22), Joan Escalante (18), another 17-year-old boy, and Joel Jonson (22). Police reports said that the suspects barged into the victim's house and attacked her. At different interrogations, the suspects pointed out at Amarga as the one who committed the crime as they served as his lookouts. However, Amarga denied all the accusations.
According to Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO), the victim's underwear was found on top of her bed and bloodstains can be seen on the ground. Possible footprints of the suspects were also discovered near her bedroom. A 15-inch long blade weapon was also recovered from the crime scene.
Meanwhile, Facebook page Bisaya Pay Imo published a video of the actual arrest of the five suspects. It can be seen that the tension was present while they were being nabbed by the police. Bystanders and local residents cannot help but physically assault some of the suspects because of anger. The Facebook page pointed out that the suspect in maroon is the one who raped and stabbed the victim.
The comment section of the post was filled with hate remarks from the netizens. Most of them asked for the inclusion of rape in the list of crimes punishable by death penalty. They also questioned the involvement of the two women in the crime.
